India According to a Two-and-a-Half-Year-Old

"It was like 40 days and 40 nights."  - Ian's response to "What was our trip to India like?"

We think our first-born son is pretty cool, and we never tire of his thoughts.  We gave him a few dried apricots and asked him some questions about our four-month trip to India.  Here's a little bit of what he said:

Where is India?
It's where the Taj Mahal is.

What's your favorite Indian food?
My favorite Indian food is granola & raisins.

Okay but that's not really an Indian food...that's something we had this week at the hotel.  What did you eat every day while you were in India?
Chicken, Puri, Aloo Gobi, Makhan (that's butter in Hindi); those are my favorite Indian foods.

What do people worship in India?
They worship idols...

What are idols?
Um.  They're made of clay and wood and straw...and they have noses but they can't smell...

Did you visit the jungle while you were in India?
Yeah, where elephants live.

What did you do there?
I do some great things there.

While we were in India, did you like the jungle better or the mountains better?
I like my mommy and daddy and Nora better.

What did Nora think of India?
She grabbed leaves and then put it in her mouth.

What was Nora's favorite thing about India?
Her favorite thing in India was milk.

What was the Taj Mahal like?
It was a really cool town.

What did it look like?
It looked like a big town...and havin' stars...
(there were stars carved in the marble ceiling inside the dome)

Is it white or black?
Whiiiite.

I decided to show him some photos and asked him to tell me about them...
What's goin' on here?
A little sheeeeep.  No it's a little black goat that's lost and needs her mommy and her daddy and her big boy.  But he's sad that their mommy and daddy and his little boy needs to eat some nice grass.  Maybe a nice animal can put him on his nice soft back and carry him to his mommy & daddy and to his little boy.

What is this?
A "hindi."
What is happening here?
We go'd to the barber and he cut our hair.
How did you feel about that?
I feeled happy about that.  He cut my hair and I wasn't afraid of it.  I was a good little boy in that chair with that barber cutting my hair.  I didn't whine or scream or touch his scissors, I just hold still.  Then he let me out of his chair and I brought stones to everyone.

(squealing) HAH!  Look at Nora!  She's playing peek-a-boo w/ Ramola Auntie.  That's silly.

We touchin' an elephant.
What was it like?
It was like a COOL adventure!  We touched his nice trunk.
What did it feel like?
It feeled like the elephant was soft.
Soft?
Yeah.  But elephants go BOOM BOOM with their big stompin' feet.

Oh there's Daddy & Ian riding on the motorcycle.  (giggling)

What do you see in this picture?
(Yawn)  I think I'm sleepy...

What's goin' on there?
It when my teach the children about the animals and his daddy and his baby and his big brother and his daddy and his sister...
They say "I don't have no brother."
(We're doing an English lesson on "How many brothers do you have?"  "Do you have a sister?" etc)

So there you have it.  A little bit of India according to Ian!
